Fueling the Facebook Music Rumors
Posted by Kristen Nicole under Uncategorized
More fuel for the rumors surrounding Facebook Music. It’s being mentioned in the blogosphere that the social network may actually be announcing the new platform next week at ad:tech NYC.
We’ve heard for some time now that Facebook’s been in low key meetings with all major record labels, but here are some reported details of how the music store would actually work: music labels get a registered sub-domain on Facebook, similar to how applications get sub-domains.
Then Facebook users can essentially connect with musicians as fans, and get access to the media that’s found on individual artists’ pages. This would offer a direct line between artists and fans, for the distribution of music, videos, and images.
Then of course, there would be marketing and media promotion, which sounds like a deeper integration with the upcoming Facebook ad network. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for an official word from Facebook.

How Will Free ESPN Hurt the Cable Companies?
Posted by Kristen Nicole under Uncategorized
The basketball season started yesterday, and ESPN is rolling out its online efforts by offering live simulcasts on its website, EPSN360. It’s even going so far as to offer every game carried on ESPN, ESPN2, and the playoffs. ESPN is looking to create an online hub for live events, which will be free for users. Archives of games will also be available for viewing at later times.
So what’s this mean for cable companies? As many of them offer broadband services as well, you’d think some sort of deal could be worked out. But it’s been reported that some cable companies are having some issues with the free offering of ESPN content. So while ESPN does its part in appealing to the larger masses and follow current trends, some cable companies are bound to get mad in the meantime.
This particular situation is different from what we’ve seen with the broadcast channels, when they offered several shows for free online and through iTunes to jump start the season. In fact, ABC had one such deal with AOL.
Cable is a paid-service, and cable companies rely on subscription packages to earn revenue from consumers. So with premium content such as that found on the ESPN Network, there may be some due cause for worry. NBC is going a slightly similar route with the offering of free sports content in partnership with other networks, like MediaZone.

Last.fm and BBC Launch Charts for UK Radio Stations
Posted by Adam Ostrow under Uncategorized
Last.fm has partnered with BBC Radio’s pop music stations to show users of the social music service what’s being broadcast. Users are then able to view charts of what has been most-played on Radio 1, Radio 2, 1 Xtra, and BBC 6, as well as compare their music taste compatibility with the stations through Last.fm’s “taste-o-meter.”
Last.fm has been tracking what’s been played on BBC’s stations since the spring in order to build up data for their chart features. The company is certainly developing a nice collection of data, and has already teamed up with Music Week to publish some of its charts in the industry magazine. As a part of CBS, Last.fm may be looking to establish itself as the Web 2.0 version of Billboard.
So what’s most popular right now in the UK? On BBC 1, the top three artists are The Hoosiers, Sugababes, and Robyn, followed by a few staples of American pop music including Avril Lavigne and Kanye West. Last.fm is based in London, so its not too surprising these two companies are finding ways to work together.

AOL Goes Local In India
Posted by Stan Schroeder under Uncategorized

AOL launches Hindi and Tamil language versions of its Internet portal in India today. It’s one step in their expansion strategy, in which they plan to conquer 30 regions by the end of next year. Video search will also be enabled in 8 regions: France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Some might recall that this video search is (at least partly) based on the remnants of SingingFish, a popular audio/video search web site acquired by AOL but killed off earlier this year.
The launch of the local Indian sites coincides with Fortune Global Forum conferences in that region this week, hosted by AOL.
This expansion comes on the heels of AOL’s restructuring, which saw them selling their internet service providing business outside of the States and focusing on creating free Internet portals which mostly make revenue from advertising. Recently, AOL launched localized versions of its portal in Sweden, Spain and Italy. We’ll see how well will they fare after the expansion, since their second quarter online advertising revenues rose only 16 percent, in contrast to 40 percent growth in the previous four quarters.

Halloween D.I.Y Project: Make Your Own Zombie
Posted by Dustin Wax under Uncategorized

One of the most overlooked yet incredibly useful personal productivity tools available today is the zombie. Though incapable of many creative tasks, they are ideal for most corporate work, and suitable for all manner of tasks requiring physical strength, repetitive actions, risk to life and limb, or the death of your enemies. What’s more, zombies work for free (though you must remember never to feed them anything with salt in it). What better way is there to Get Things Done?
Zombies are the ultimate D.I.Y. project, and uses only natural materials (though handle them with care, lest you find you’ve zombified yourself). Follow these simple steps and you’ll have your own zombie ready to work in no time!
