Bleacher Report Takes Citizen Journalism to Fox Sports
Posted by Kristen Nicole under 1
Bleacher Report is a recently launched sports fans network that features original content from citizen journalists around the nation. When Bleacher Report was first mentioned on Mashable earlier this year, Adam O. noted that competition would be disadvantageous if the larger networks rolled out an aggressive citizen journalism strategy.
And as we’ve seen with some of ESPN’s recent developments, contributions from citizen journalists is definitely of interest to the larger networks. So if Bleacher Report can’t beat ‘em, why not join ‘em? Next week, Bleacher Report will formally announce its partnership with Fox Sports, where content from Bleacher Report users will be featured alongside Fox Sports’ online content.
But it’s just a widget…
It’s a unique meshing of editorial, professional and user-generated content that’s aggregating material from Bleacher Report’s network. Promising move for several user-generated citizen journalism sites out there? Maybe, if the Bleacher Report content weren’t limited to a widget. This widget offering works almost as the reverse of the typical traditional media online distribution model, such as Mochila, yet stays in line with the way in which most traditional media networks import user generated content.
It’s been clear for years now that old media has been seeking more ways in which to interject user-generated contributions to their site, but few have become more integrated with their regular content. Nevertheless, this is another small step in validating the content being created by citizen journalists in mainstream media.
Bleacher Report has also hinted that this partnership with Fox Sports is the first of many partnerships to come, so we’ll be on the lookout for Bleacher Report’s expanded distribution strategy across sites (and devices?).
