Now that Microsoft-Yahoo has officially collapsed, speculation moves on to what the next Internet mega-deal might look like. Realistically, there are only two companies that can pull off anything resembling the scale of what Microsoft-Yahoo would have been – and those are Microsoft and Google.
The two technology titans are at markedly different points in their respective histories. Microsoft is desperate for a way to become more relevant on the Web, while Google is in a race against time to find its next homerun as the search advertising market matures.
